preparing for your headshot

bring your smile

One of the most important factors in having your portrait is having fun. You'll want your portrait to be one that shows you smiling and being happy, and we will do our very best to make sure that your portrait experience will be a great one.

take your time

There are a few other things to consider. We want to be respectful of your time. Nobody wants to sit around and have dozens of pictures of the same pose, so we will do our best to make your experience as efficient as possible... and give you results that you will be happy with. Naturally individual portraits will take less time then group or family portraits, so depending on how many photo's and different poses you want, an individual should plan on spending between 45 and 60 minutes. For a family or group shot, plan between 60 and 75 minutes. This will give us time to make your portraits in a relaxed, stress-free environment, and create poses that will compliment you. After all, our goal is to make you look great!

the setting

We will photograph you in a location and background of your choice or front of one of our studio backgrounds, If you choose your own background, it can be either an indoor or outdoor setting, at your home, or your favorite place.

For indoor portraits, we will most likely use several studio lights (or flashes) to control shadows and feature your highlights.  For obvious reasons, outdoor portraits depend on the weather. We want to avoid harsh sunlight and uneven shadows, which may require the use reflectors and a flash to fill in some of the shadows. The best time for outdoor portrait photography is late morning or late afternoon. You might even be asked hold a reflector in your hands (out of sight of the camera) to help us control the light. So you see, this will be a fun, interactive experience!

what to wear for your portrait

Avoid wearing clothing with stripes. These can cause a phenomena known as a moiré, which will be an unwanted distraction to your photo. Solids are best, especially cool blues, natural tones, and pastels. They are visually appealing to the eye - and to the lens, but you can wear prints if you prefer - just not stripes, fine patterns, or herringbone please.

If we are shooting against a very dark or black backdrop, then you should consider wearing lighter colors. Avoid very bright colors as they can create reflections on your skin, or if being photographed with others, on their skin. Please don't wear your favorite florescent green shirt or jacket.

and finally...

Remember - THIS IS ALL ABOUT YOU! We will want to get together with you a week or so before your session so we can discuss all the details - poses, location, what to wear, etc. It will also give us an opportunity to explain to you how the session will go, so you know in advance what to expect.  If there is a particular pose that you want, we will talk about it and work it into our session. We'd love to add your portraits to our Portrait Gallery.

smile. relax. have fun. this is your day!
