Puckett Cabin

Puckett Cabin

The historic Puckett cabin along The Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia. The Puckett Cabin along the Blue Ridge Parkway in VA.

Orleana Hawks Puckett lived in this cabin in her later years until her death at 102 (born in 1837). She was illiterate, so the spelling of her name is uncertain: Orlena, or Orleana. After she was 50 years old, she began a career as a midwife and assisted in the delivery of over 1,000 babies. Her fee for delivering babies was $1..0, and sometime as much as $6.00. She was often paid with food or other goods. She married at 16 and was pregnant herself 24 times, but none of her own children survived infancy. She had to move from this home in 1939 because of the construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway and died soon thereafter.
